## A new standard for digital asset risk management

The Risk Collective is not just an insurance placement mechanism. It is a more joined-up way to manage digital asset risk.

Today we're announcing a strategic partnership with [Continuum](https://www.continuuminsure.com/), a specialist risk advisory and insurance solutions firm focused on emerging technology across Asia.

The partnership brings Continuum's regional expertise and advisory capabilities together with Native's specialist digital asset knowledge and access to the London insurance market. Together, we'll be supporting digital asset businesses, Web3 companies, blockchain infrastructure providers, and other emerging technology firms across the region with insurance built for how this industry actually operates.

## Why Asia, and why now

Asia has become one of the most important regions in the world for digital assets. Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and other regional markets are home to a fast-growing ecosystem of exchanges, custodians, protocols, infrastructure providers, and institutional players — many of them at the leading edge of where the industry is heading.

As adoption accelerates, the expectations on these businesses are rising just as quickly. Investors want to see proper governance. Regulators are tightening requirements around custody, conduct, and operational resilience. Counterparties and customers expect balance sheet protection. Insurance is increasingly part of that picture as critical infrastructure for any serious business operating in this space.

Bringing specialist digital asset insurance to Asia: our partnership with Continuum

On 1 March, objects struck an Amazon AWS data center in the UAE, triggering a cloud outage that rippled across businesses globally. 

That warning now feels even more immediate. Recent threats against the $30 billion Stargate AI data centre being built in Abu Dhabi by OpenAI, and relied on by technology partners including Nvidia, Cisco, Oracle and SoftBank, have reinforced just how strategically exposed digital infrastructure has become.

For many it was a technology story. For the insurance and risk community, it was something more significant.

Over the past decade, data centers have become some of the most critical infrastructure in the modern economy. They power financial markets, AI development, cloud computing, telecommunications, and the digital services that billions of people rely on every day. 
In previous generations, the strategic assets nations sought to protect, and adversaries sought to target, were oil fields, ports, and energy pipelines. Data centres now carry the same strategic weight.

The majority of hyperscale capacity remains concentrated in the United States, with major expansion underway across the UAE, the European Union, and Canada. As geopolitical tensions reach boiling point, these critical assets are no longer simply a technology consideration.
Data centers represent concentrations of digital value: compute power, data, and network connectivity that economies depend on. When physical or cyber incidents strike a hyperscale cluster, the effects can quickly spread across financial services, digital platforms, and the businesses that depend on them. 

The AWS incident in the UAE is a live illustration of exactly this reality.

For the insurance industry, this moment deserves serious reflection.

Insurance operates on a foundational principle: the many pay for the claims of the few. Losses in one area are socialised and offset by stability in others. It is why wildfires in California can move homeowner premiums in Missouri. It is why reinsurers diversify their books geographically and across coverage classes, including property, aviation, cargo, political risk, and professional liability, to ensure no single event creates a catastrophic concentration of loss.

But here is the challenge of our current moment. when geopolitical events escalate, many of those diversified categories move together. A conflict in a data-center-dense region doesn't produce one claim. It produces simultaneous exposure across property, business interruption, cyber, cargo, political risk, and aviation, at once and at scale.

The old frameworks, war exclusions, cyber carve-outs, political risk definitions, were not designed for an era where a single physical event in a server hall can halt financial markets, disrupt global supply chains, and trigger cascading cyber incidents across multiple jurisdictions in minutes.

The question for our industry is not whether these risks exist. They clearly do. The question is whether we are positioned to respond to them with the sophistication they demand.

## Key questions every insurer and reinsurer should be asking now:

- How do we model geopolitical exposure in digital infrastructure, particularly in hyperscale clusters where concentration risk is acute?
- How should traditional war and cyber exclusions evolve when the line between an act of war, terrorism, and state-sponsored cyber attack is deliberately blurred?
- Are our clients, especially those operating in geopolitically exposed regions, adequately covered, or have they assumed protections that exclusion clauses will ultimately deny them?
- In the current soft market, are we locking in the right structures for our clients before conditions tighten?

These are not hypothetical questions for the future. The AWS incident in the UAE is one data point. There will be others.

## A practical word on timing.

We are currently in a soft market. For businesses operating in or around digital infrastructure, this is an important window. Current market conditions can provide businesses with an opportunity to review limits, pricing and policy duration. The turmoil we are seeing across geopolitical flashpoints will have far-reaching effects on capacity and pricing. Getting coverage structured during a soft market is a prudent decision for businesses with material exposure. That window will not stay open indefinitely.

## Resilience in the digital age requires more than technological redundancy. It requires geopolitical diversification and insurance frameworks that reflect that reality.

The expansion of data center capacity across multiple jurisdictions reflects an emerging recognition of this by the technology sector. The insurance market must consider moving with the same urgency.
